UPCOMING FESTIVALS
OPEN HOUSE HELSINKI
HELSINKI, FINLAND
16-19 MAY
Building on last year’s theme of “re-use”, the 2024 edition of Open House Helsinki zeros in on regional planning. The programme focuses on neighbourhoods where layers from different eras complement each other. Don’t miss the guided walking tours to Kruunuvuorenranta and Katajanokka, which will offer great insights into the regional planning perspective, or Weekly Talks, which delve into the future of Helsinki's core areas. The Vitality of the City Centre panel invites diverse experts to discuss the city centre's identity, attractiveness, and development.
OPEN HOUSE BRNO
BRNO, CZECHIA
18-19 MAY
The inclusion and accessibility of Brno as a single architectural unit is a centrepiece of Open House Brno. The festival emphasises the importance of architecture in making spaces friendly for various social groups, including children, parents, guardians, seniors, and people with disabilities. Be sure to check out a special exhibition of 26 examples of buildings that foreground inclusive design in the city at St. Anne’s University Hospital (Czech and English descriptions).
Festival experiences include the chance to learn about the conversion of a Baroque palace into the Jiří Mahen Central Library, the largest public library in Moravia; prefabrication techniques at Lesná Polyclinic; and the unique neoclassical Villa Rohrer with a modern extension.
Can’t make it to Brno? Enjoy OHB’s video tours on YouTube or listen to new episodes of their podcast (Czech only), including a conversation about Holedná lookout tower with architect Tomáš Jurák, and the Brno Velodrome, the oldest building of its kind in the world still in use.
OPEN HOUSE VILNIUS
VILNIUS, LITHUANIA
18-19 MAY
Under the banner “People Creating the City”, Open House Vilnius offers interactions with various residents shaping the capital. This includes the contemporary dance performance "Young City" by students of the National M. K. Čiurlionis School of Arts; visits to studios of architecture practices, as well as a meeting with the Chief Architect at the city municipality.
The festival also pays special attention to accessibility for people with various mobility needs and language barriers, offering tours in English and Ukrainian—for the community that found its home-away-from-home in Vilnius—to foster a sense of connection and cultural inclusivity.
OPEN HOUSE GDYNIA
GDYNIA, POLAND
25-26 MAY
The 10th-anniversary edition of Open House Gdynia opens the doors to 80 buildings and promises to be the biggest event in the festival’s history. The festival spotlights the excellence of Gdynia's modernism—pre- and post-World War II—and how this Baltic port is a young city and a symbol of modernist style.
The weekend programme also features unique experiences such as a ride on the Mercedes karaoke bus; a cheerful discussion on the book "Word of Humour" with author Olga Drenda; and a chance to listen in on the live Podcastex recording about the 90s and 00s eras in the Tri-city area.
